Maple View Farm - Hillsborough, NC

The year was 1963 and Bob Nutter was escaping the harsh weather in Maine to deliver three cows down South. His first stop was New Jersey, then he continued on to North Carolina and Georgia. As he made his way back to the snow that waited for him in Maine, he drove through the lush rolling hills of North Carolina and took in the sight of green grass and flowers on a sunny April day.

When Bob returned home to his family's dairy farm he told his father that, "there is a much better place to raise cows than Maine!" In July, the family made the move down to North Carolina and began looking for land. It only took them two weeks to find and fall in love with 600 acres that were for sale in Hillsborough. They purchased the land and began establishing their farm. On August 1, 1963 they milked their first cow and they have been milking every day since.

Maple View Farm now consists of 400 acres - 200 for graising and 200 for growing barley and corn to feed the cattle. The farm produces milk, butter and ice cream. In an average week they ship around 10,000 bottles of milk.

You can see the farm any time by visiting the Maple View Agricultural Center or Country Store (which sells delicious ice cream!). For more information visit: http://www.mapleviewfarm.com/

Orange County Smoke-Free Public Places Rule

On November 20, 2012, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners voted 6-1 in favor of adopting a rule to ban smoking in public places.

The ban applies to property owned by Orange County and the municipal governments, including parks and sidewalks. Smoking will also not be allowed on private property where the public is invited. The UNC campus and other state governed facilities will continue operating under their existing smoking ordinances and will not be affected by the new rule.

The first step of the rule will be an education period beginning January 1, 2013. Full enforcement of the rule will go into effect on July 1, 2013. A $25 fine will be issued to any violators, but the current emphasis is being placed on awareness of the consequences of secondhand smoke and reversing people’s behavior in an effort to improve the County’s overall quality of life.

The idea of a smoke-free public places ordinance in Orange County originated two years ago when a group of County high schools students approached the Board of Health, requesting they consider adopting such a rule. The Rule was brought to a vote following a public hearing on October 24, 2012, and passed 10-1.
